Titre : American History, Race and the Struggle for Equality : An Unfinished Journey Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Masaki Kawashima, Auteur Editeur : Palgrave Macmillan Année de publication : 2017 Importance : 313p. Format : 15x23cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-981-10-1976-0 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Powerfully synthesizing major currents in the field, this book addresses the issue of inequality across American politics and society, using race as a lens for the exploration of major themes in American history. It considers the concept of race as a social construction, against the background of the historical struggles for “fairness” in a society based on the framework of democracy, whose principle is that majority’s consent be necessary for the fulfillment of “justice.”
Foregrounding problems of race, capital, and political economy, it particularly examines the connections between race and class, the relationship of slavery and national politics, and the distinctive intellectual framework that Americans have developed to discuss “race.”
Offering a detailed account of civil rights legislation, an overview of immigration law and policy, and comprehensive overviews of debates about affirmative action, immigration, and the causes and solutions to racialized urban poverty, this book emphasizes what is distinctive about the United States and offers a unique comparative framework for thinking about America’s racial past.En ligne : https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/512+QwfJzyL._SY344_BO1,204,203, [...] American History, Race and the Struggle for Equality : An Unfinished Journey [texte imprimé] / Masaki Kawashima, Auteur . - Palgrave Macmillan, 2017 . - 313p. ; 15x23cm.

Titre : Avant-garde Orientalism : The Eastern 'Other' in Twentieth-Century Travel Narrative and Poetry Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : David LeHardy Sweet, Auteur Editeur : Palgrave Macmillan Année de publication : 2017 Importance : 318 p. Format : 15x23cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-319-50372-1 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé :
This study explores the work of Western avant-garde writers who traveled to and wrote about Asia and North Africa. Though exoticist in outlook, many of these writers were also anti-colonialist and thus avoided some of the pitfalls of academic orientalism by assuming an aesthetics of diversity while employing strategies of provocation and reciprocity. As a survey of works on travel (including essays, novels, poems, and plays), the book challenges or modifies many postcolonial assumptions about Western writers on the Orient: from the French Surrealists to the American Beats and even transnational authors of the new millennium. Through a synthesis of avant-garde, postcolonial, and travel literature theories, Avant-garde Orientalism works in the best tradition of comparative literary study to identify and analyze a distinct category of world literature.

Titre : Black Studies and the Democratization of American Higher Education Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Charles P. Henry, Auteur Editeur : Palgrave Macmillan Année de publication : 2017 Importance : 279 p. Format : 15x23cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-319-35088-2 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : This book aims to expand what scholars know and who is included in this discussion about black studies, which aids in the democratization of American higher education and the deconstruction of traditional disciplines of high education, to facilitate a sense of social justice. By challenging traditional disciplines, black studies reveals not only the political role of American universities but also the political aspects of the disciplines that constitute their core. While black studies is post-modern in its deconstruction of positivism and universalism, it does not support a radical rejection of all attempts to determine truth. Evolving from a form of black cultural nationalism, it challenges the perceived white cultural nationalist norm and has become a critical multiculturalism that is more global and less gendered. Henry argues for the inclusion of black studies beyond the curriculum of colleges and universities. Format : 15x23cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-319-33221-5 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : This book is the first comparative study of early modern English and Dutch women writers. It explores women’s rich and complex responses to the birth of the public sphere, new concepts of privacy, and the ideology of domesticity in the seventeenth century. Women in both countries were briefly allowed a public voice during times of political upheaval, but were increasingly imagined as properly confined to the household by the end of the century. This book compares how English and Dutch women responded to these changes. It discusses praise of women, marriage manuals, and attitudes to female literacy, along with female artistic and literary expressions in the form of painting, engraving, embroidery, print, drama, poetry, and prose, to offer a rich account of women’s contributions to debates on issues that mattered most to them.

Titre : Educational Commons in Theory and Practice: Global Pedagogy and Politics : Global Pedagogy and Politics Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Alexander J. Means, Auteur ; Derek R. Ford, Auteur ; Graham B. Slater, Auteur Editeur : Palgrave Macmillan Année de publication : 2017 Importance : 280p. Format : 15x23cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-137-58640-7 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : In this volume, critical scholars and educational activists explore the intricate dynamics between the enclosure of global commons and radical visions of a common social future that breaks through the logics of privatization, ecological degradation, and dehumanizing social hierarchies in education. In its institutional and informal configurations alike, education has been identified as perhaps the key stake in this struggle. Insisting on the urgency of an education that breaks free of the bonds of enclosure, the essays included in this volume weave together bright threads of radical thought into a vivid tapestry illustrating a critical framework for enacting a global educational commons.
