Study of the argan woodland of Tindouf: Current situation, constraints and perspectives of its development.
Abstract
The area of the argan tree covers in the North-Westerner Africa a total surface of 12285 km² spread out over three bioclimatic domains: The Mediterranean domain, the Saharo-atlantic and the Saharan sub Atlantic. In Algeria, we have bounded the argan woodland of Tindouf which extends overs 50670 hectares by means of the GIS (geographic information system) after localization on ground by GPS (Global Positioning System). A toponymical study has been opted to prove the existence of the Argania spinosa in the low-Drâa and in Saguiat El-Hamra. We have been able to deduct through a cartographical analysis a connection between the tow isolated stations in the North of Morocco and the old caravans’ roads. The study of the behavior of the argan tree in tree nursery showed that the best recorded rates of resumption after one year were obtained at Adrar (82.5%) Where the average lengths of the highest stalks (51.3±4.1cm). Compared to Tindouf where the success rate does not exceed the 45 % with an average length of the plants of 34.2±3.9cm. However, the results of the transplantation after 16 years showed the good behavior of the argan tree in the various sites ex situ. The dendrometric measures of the subjects gave an annual average increase in diameter of 0,55cm for a height of 0.23m. A diagnosis of reforestation has been established after six consecutive years of follow-up on two experimental stations: Tindouf and Adrar. The obtained results showed a good behavior of the species which belongs to a dry and hyper dry Mediterranean continental and semi continental climate. The success rates vary between 26 and 33.8 %, recorded with an average height of 185cm in the station of Adrar, against 125 cm in Tindouf. The monthly observation of the phenological stages of the argan tree shows a two-yearly cycle which includes a delayed blooming of the floral buttons during the hottest summer period of the year. The morphometric analysis of 733 seeds allowed exploring the polymorphism of the species. Indeed, the average dimensions of the quantitative variables studied (length, width, thickness and weight) allowed us with a qualitative sorting to distinguish 14 ecotypes of Argania spinosa. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) shows a very significant difference between the observed ecotypes; however, the origin/climate factor has no effect. To study their effect on the seeding, the ecotypes were subjected to germinal tests in the laboratory. The obtained results revealed the effect of the seeds morphology which could be used as descriptor of selection. Indeed, the best yields were recorded with seeds having the forms: Stretched, round and spindle-shaped with oblique crack. The biometric study made on 659 leaves of argan tree coming from various regions which belong to different bioclimatic floors (Saharan, dry and semi dry) showed a significant inter and intra-stations difference, where the bioclimatic stages effect was in fact recorded. The structural analysis of the Argania spinosa populations revealed a gardened structure for 1192 subjects inventoried and located by GPS. The average height of the trees is 4.7 m. The big unwelded stalk can reach 65 cm. The dense regeneration represents 43 %. The illicit cuttings affected 21% of stumps. The latters burgeon in form of crowns near mounds on beds of wadis. The rate of covering on bed of major wadi is 20 % for only 8.61 % on bed of minor wadi. The average space between trees is of the order of 13m. The argan tree retains an important volume of the ground with an average of 56 m3 / stump. An increasing relation was found out between the volume of mounds and the number of stalks. Argania spinosa amplifies a process of grounds restoration by micro-horizons thanks to its superficial root system which spreads axial raillons. The floral and faunistic inventory was made by an exhaustive sampling. It engenders a floral genetic diversity by 79 species, 33 families and 67 kinds (genres). The faunistic list is constituted of 26 birds, 17 mammals, 9 reptiles and snakes. Under the extreme conditions, the argan tree perceives the necessary hydric compensations; it is about water underflows of wadis. On the socioeconomic plan, the argan tree guarantees multiple uses for the nomads where it constitutes the core of the rural economy in a traditional agrarian system articulated around the breeding.
