Reshaping the Past: The Oscillation of Memories of Slavery between Past and Present as Represented in the Original American Miniseries Roots (1977) and its Remake in 2016 / Saadia OULDYEROU
Titre : Reshaping the Past: The Oscillation of Memories of Slavery between Past and Present as Represented in the Original American Miniseries Roots (1977) and its Remake in 2016 Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Saadia OULDYEROU, Auteur Editeur : université de Tlemcen Année de publication : 2020/2021 Importance : 264 p. Format : 21/27 cm. Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Alex Haley –Blacks - Black Lives Matter - Content Analysis Theory – Memory - Roots – Slavery –Stuart Hall Résumé : Representing an atrocious side of the U.S. (United States) history, slavery has always been a sensitive issue whose discussion was
steered clear by the Americans. Hollywood, for instance, as an American film industry, treated Blacks as pariahs and eschewed
from giving their experience in America its due on the screen for a long time. In fact, anti-Black racism harks back to the period that
extends from 1619 to 1865 when Blacks were slaves under the subjugation of the Whites. Once they got their freedom in 1865,
they fought heart and soul to be fully integrated into the American society, and they succeeded after the passage of the Civil Rights
Act and the Voting Rights Act in 1964 and 1965, respectively. Blacks’ positions in the American motion picture, hence, changed as
well. In 1977, Alex Haley’s Roots: the Saga of an American Family (1976) was adapted into the miniseries Roots that became a
smash hit. In 2016, its remake was produced to address the modern generation of the Black Lives Matter era. In this regard, this
thesis explores twofold aspects: the production and the reception of the remake. On the one hand, it focuses on the way the new
miniseries was modernized with reference to the context. On the other hand, it investigates how the audience received the remake.
To this aim, the encoding/decoding model of Stuart Hall and the content analysis method were used not only to extract the
embedded messages of the remake through a close look at some aspects of the adopted cinematographic and mise-en-scène
techniques but also to analyze the stances of the audience. The results reveal that the producers availed themselves of diverse
methods to speed the circulation of the remake that diverges in many instances from its original. Going in tandem with the
surrounding racial happenings, the producers implemented intensive violent images, relied on more accurate information than in the
original miniseries, and omitted the White’s benevolent side to point up Blacks’ staunch resistance to survive and to be accepted as
part ofthe whole but not losing their African heritage, identity and dignity. The susceptibility of the audience to feed his memory by
embracing and preserving the past –however horrific it was –to define and understand the present was clearly laid bare as well.Reshaping the Past: The Oscillation of Memories of Slavery between Past and Present as Represented in the Original American Miniseries Roots (1977) and its Remake in 2016 [texte imprimé] / Saadia OULDYEROU, Auteur . - université de Tlemcen, 2020/2021 . - 264 p. ; 21/27 cm.

communication in formal settings, like education, while the colloquial forms areusedin
relaxed settings. Being an Arabic-speaking country, Algeriafalls into the pattern of Arabic
diglossia. Yet, observing language use in authentic situations does escape the rule. Any
observer will agree that in formal settings, speakers switch codes; instead of using MSA
solely, they tend to mix it with colloquial Arabic. In education, considering its three levels,
primary, middle and secondary schools, the learners are supposed to stick to Modern Standard
Arabic in class. However, diglossic switching is far from being a strange practice in class. In
the fieldwork of the present research, reasons laying behind this linguistic phenomenon have
been explored, mainly the pupils’ attitudes towards the available linguistic codes as well as
the lack of fluency in MSA.A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Diglossic Switching in Algerian Classroom Settings: MSA/Colloquial Arabic Alternation in Primary, Middle and Secondary Levels [texte imprimé] / Lamia BENADLA, Auteur . - université de Tlemcen, 2022/2023 . - 231 p. ; 21x27 cm.

mother tongue of the Algerian learner, on the other, makes the process of
learning an arduous one. This thesis examines the classroom discourse in
primary school. Describing first, how primary school teachers and learners
have co constructed the classroom talk. It then considers lesson description by
exploring teachers’ knowledge, understanding of, and attitudes towards,
languages and diglossia. The study scrutinizes primary teachers’ attitudes vis-
à -vis the introduction of dual variety education in Algerian classroom. The
data are discussed in terms of education and second language acquisition
theory and Algerian education and language policies. The results indicate that
the teachers lack awareness about this linguistic issue which overwhelm the
Algerian classroom. They all recognize that a lack of exposure to MSA is the
primary cause of language problems for learners and that AA, the mother
tongue is a downgraded variety and does not need to be maintained or
promoted in the school. However, they do accept the introduction of dual
language education as strategy to help learners learning MSA in an early age.
The thesis concludes that shortcomings in training and information encourage
these two assumptions to take root and that the implementation of three-year
kindergarten institution in which the instruction will be in both AA and MSA
is necessary.SOCIOLINGUISTIC AND PEDAGOGICAL DIMENSIONS OF DIALECT USE IN PRE-SCHOOL INSTRUCTION: THE CASE OF PRIMARY SCHOOL IN ALGERIAN EDUCATION [texte imprimé] / Omar AZZOUG, Auteur . - Tlemcen : University Aboubakr Belkaid, 2019 . - 303 p. ; 21*27 cm.

first priorities, great efforts were exerted in order to enable these learners to be EBP users in NDIL company.
To attain this, the researcher conducted a research to design an effective EBP syllabus to these learners. This
research required data to identify the needs of them. These data was gathered via the use of several data
collection instruments: questionnaire, unstructured interview, tests, and participatory observation. These
research methods have been used to collect data from different samples: convenient sample of EBP learners

Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Diglossia, Algerian Dialects Modern Standard Arabic, Education Résumé : This work is part of a socio-didactic investigation, it focuses on various sociolinguistic concepts,
examining the phenomenon of diglossia observed in primary schools for the sake of bridging the gap between
the use of the standard Arabic and dialect that characterizes the educational process at the level of our primary
schools. The inquiry shows that the teaching of the Arabic language is not immune of the effects of diglossia
on the learner. This study is based on the fact that within the different uses of language in the same society,
there are some dialects which distinguish categories and social classes from others, for instance jargons of
professions, and the local regional dialects like those observed in Algerian dialects. Consequently, a research
has been conducted, targeting some primary institutions. It should be noted that this work is concerned with
the natural development of Arabic within the educational process at distinct levels. The Diglossic Situation in an Algerian Language Teaching Context: Case of Tlemcen Primary Schools [texte imprimé] / Faïçal FATMI, Auteur . - Tlemcen : University Aboubakr Belkaid, 2019 . - 237 p. ; 21*27 cm.

Résumé : One of the bonafide interests of Postcolonial Literature is to deal with the issue of the cultural aspects’ disorder caused by colonialism. With the purpose of understanding the literature of any period, there should be a reference to the society of this era, for so, culture in literature has taken the biggest part of importance in most of the novels written by authors recently, and even during the last century. Therefore, the present research deals with the cultural dislocation along with the loss of identity of the Indian people after achieving their independence. It also opens the discussion over the effects of the waves of multiculturalism caused by the European nations, and the changeable hybridization of cultures which drove them lost. Moreover, the thesis attempts to show the position of Naipaul while claiming these social phenomena through his novels A House for Mr Biswas and A Bend in the River. All in all, this work tackles cultural aspects with more emphasis on identity and diaspora from a Naipaulian postcolonial perception. The Dilemma of the Other: Diaspora and Identity in V. Format : 21/27 cm. Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Oran Arabic/French Code-Switching, asymmetry, cognition, congruence,
semantic and syntactic mismatch, Algerian bilinguals, Oran Arabic.Résumé : This research attempts to describe and analyze some linguistic practices among Algerian
students resulting from contact between Oran Arabic and French. Indeed, this study is based
mainly on a double orientation. The first approach appears to be descriptive/ analytic, and tries
to apply the theoretical and empirical foundations of the insertional models proposed by MyersScotton on a corpus realized among university students recorded in different speech situations
even if university remains the major context (formal setting). The second approach seems to be
interpretive principally based on quantitative and qualitative methods in order to test the
empirical validity and the explanatory power of Myers-Scotton’s insertional models.
The main idea underlying this research seeks to establish a link between the asymmetry in
the different patterns of Oran Arabic/French Code-Switching realized by bilingual students
showing varying degrees of bilinguality, and the asymmetry with regard to the organization of
the various system and content morphemes in the mental lexicon.
Despite the structural explanations of the dueling languages permitting the alternation
from French to Oran Arabic and vice versa, other factors appear to be influential in the shaping
of mixed constructions, namely the speakers’ competence in the languages involved in the
mixed constructions, the pragmatic intentions of the interlocutors when producing mixed
constituents, Embedded Islands and Internal Islands as well as the speakers’ attitudes towards
the languages involved in bilingual speech.
In fact, this research is basically founded on a corpus of spontaneous conversations
recorded among some Algerian bilingual/plurilingual students. The analysis of the students’
productions tries to demonstrate the directionality of Code-Switching in an Algerian context
where the emplacement, the distribution and the status of the syntactic categories/structures
were investigated when French and Oran Arabic have been shown as Matrix or Embedded
Languages in the corpus.
Unlike other researches on Code-Switching and mainly studies undertaken by Ziamari,
which targeted the correlation of the specificities of Moroccan Arabic/French Code-Switching
to the fact of urbanity, this research aims to demonstrate that the linguistic dynamism due to
Oran Arabic/French duality is the result of a particular practice that distinguishes a community
of practice (that of bilingual students) from other linguistic communities. For this purpose, the
context (university) as an urban structure cannot be the only trigger of Code-Switching if the
pragmatic intentions of the interlocutors do not favor this linguistic act.
The results obtained in this research showed that the insertion of French constructions in
a morphosyntactic frame governed by OrA as a Matrix Language is characterized by a
predominance of certain structures, namely noun phrase islands, mixed nominal constituents,
and inflectional phrases. Also, the results showed an asymmetry in the roles assigned to
languages involved in CS (Arabic and French Oran in this case). Oran Arabic appears as the
Matrix Language in most mixed-codes whereas French’ role was limited to an Embedded
Language despite the abundance of embedded structures from this language.
The insertional models which constitute the theoretical framework of this research
provide consistent elements of answers to many questions raised in this study. These models
treating issues relevant to syntax and cognition indicate a flexibility of analysis and facilitate the
understanding of complex linguistic phenomena generated by plurilingualism. Notwithstanding,
other avenues of exploration appear to be completive to this research should target the
application of the basic principles of Myers-Scotton’s models by adopting a didactic
perspective where problems of the acquisition of French and English syntactic
categories and larger constructions, error analysis, and problems of interference would
