Titre : An Introduction to Early Modern English Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Nevalainen Terrtu, Auteur Editeur : Edinburgh Année de publication : 2014 Importance : 176p. Format : 14 x 21 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-7486-1524-7 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : An introduction to Early Modern English, this book helps students of English and linguistics to place the language of the period 1500-1700 in its historical context as a language with a common core but also as one which varies across time, regionally and socially, and according to register. The volume focuses on the structure of what contemporaries called the General Dialect - its spelling, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation - and on its dialectal origins. The book also discusses the language situation and linguistic anxieties in England at a time when Latin exerted a strong influence on the rising standard language. Format : 15x23cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-138-21054-7 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : igital Literary Studies presents a broad and varied picture of the promise and potential of methods and approaches that are crucially dependent upon the digital nature of the literary texts it studies and the texts and collections of texts with which they are compared. It focuses on style, diction, characterization, and interpretation of single works and across larger groups of texts, using both huge natural language corpora and smaller, more specialized collections of texts created for specific tasks, and applies statistical techniques used in the narrower confines of authorship attribution to broader stylistic questions. It addresses important issues in each of the three major literary genres, and intentionally applies different techniques and concepts to poetry, prose, and drama. Titre : Drama, Theatre, and Identity in the American New Republic Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jeffrey H. Richards, Auteur Editeur : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 2008 Importance : 396 p. Format : 16x24cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-06668-6 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Drama, Theatre, and Identity in the American New Republic investigates the way in which theatre both reflects and shapes the question of identity in post-revolutionary American culture. In this 2005 book Richards examines a variety of phenomena connected to the stage, including closet Revolutionary political plays, British drama on American boards, American-authored stage plays, and poetry and fiction by early Republican writers. American theatre is viewed by Richards as a transatlantic hybrid in which British theatrical traditions in writing and acting provide material and templates by which Americans see and express themselves and their relationship to others. Through intensive analyses of plays both inside and outside of the early American 'canon', this book confronts matters of political, ethnic and cultural identity by moving from play text to theatrical context and from historical event to audience demography. Format : 15x23cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-319-33221-5 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : This book is the first comparative study of early modern English and Dutch women writers. It explores women’s rich and complex responses to the birth of the public sphere, new concepts of privacy, and the ideology of domesticity in the seventeenth century. Women in both countries were briefly allowed a public voice during times of political upheaval, but were increasingly imagined as properly confined to the household by the end of the century. This book compares how English and Dutch women responded to these changes. It discusses praise of women, marriage manuals, and attitudes to female literacy, along with female artistic and literary expressions in the form of painting, engraving, embroidery, print, drama, poetry, and prose, to offer a rich account of women’s contributions to debates on issues that mattered most to them.

Format : 15x23cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-137-56067-4 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : This book sheds new light on the life and work of Janusz Korczak, the twentieth century humanist moral educator and path-breaking social-pedagogue who is generally unknown in the English speaking world. In the two orphanages he led in Warsaw, Poland Korczak developed an innovative array of educational practices that motivated children from broken families suffering from serious social-interpersonal pathologies to re-form themselves during the five to seven years they lived in the orphanage. By offering its readers a systematic presentation of Korczak's worldview, educational philosophy and work, and exposing them to a rich selection of his writings, this book seeks to inform the English speaking educated public about an educator who unceasingly strived to make the world a better place for people and to make better people for the world. Titre : Shame and the Aging Woman : Confronting and Resisting Ageism in Contemporary Women's Writing Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : bouson j. brooks, Auteur Editeur : Palgrave Macmillan Année de publication : 2016 Importance : 220 p. Format : 15x21cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-319-31710-6 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé :
This book brings together the research findings of contemporary feminist age studies scholars, shame theorists, and feminist gerontologists in order to unfurl the affective dynamics of gendered ageism. In her analysis of what she calls “embodied shame,” J. Brooks Bouson describes older women’s shame about the visible signs of aging and the health and appearance of their bodies as they undergo the normal processes of bodily aging. Examining both fictional and nonfiction works by contemporary North American and British women authors, this book offers a sustained analysis of the various ways that ageism devalues and damages the identities of otherwise psychologically healthy women in our graying culture. Shame theory, as Bouson shows, astutely explains why gendered ageism is so deeply entrenched in our culture and why even aging feminists may succumb to this distressing, but sometimes hidden, cultural affliction.

This Companion brings together leading scholars in the field to re-examine First World War poetry in English at the start of the centennial commemoration of the war. It offers historical and critical contexts, fresh readings of the important soldier-poets, and investigations of the war poetry of women and civilians, Georgians and Anglo-American modernists and of poetry from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the former British colonies. The volume explores the range and diversity of this body of work, its rich afterlife and the expanding horizons and reconfiguration of the term 'First World War Poetry'. Titre : The Complete Children's Stories Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Rudyard Kipling, Auteur Editeur : Wordsworth Editions Ltd Année de publication : 2005 Importance : 858 p. Format : 15x23cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-84022-057-5 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : The Jungle Book introduces Mowgli, the boy foundling adopted by a family of wolves, Shere Khan the tiger, Bagheera the black panther and Baloo the sleepy brown bear.
How did the Leopard get his spots? How did the Elephant get his trunk? In Just So Stories Kipling wittily supplies the answers to these and other questions.
Puck of Pook's Hill relates how Dan and Una's magical meeting with Puck, the last of the People of the Hills, leads to their adventures with Romans and Crusaders, Saxons and Vikings...
And later, in Rewards and Fairies, the three meet an array of characters ranging from Iron Age warriors to 'Good Queen Bess' and Sir Francis Drake.
In Kipling's rattling school yarn Stalky & Co, Stalky, M'Turk and the Beetle are a trio of scallywags with a keen desire to break the rules, their unruly activities give the stories an enduring appeal to all children - especially those who have ever wilted beneath the stern glance of a peevish schoolmaster. Kipling's wry, sometimes tongue-in-cheek style will delight and entertain young readers while adults throughout the world will remember his stories with affection.En ligne : https://d3525k1ryd2155.cloudfront.net/f/575/220/9781840220575.BX.0.m.jpg The Complete Children's Stories [texte imprimé] / Rudyard Kipling, Auteur . - Wordsworth Editions Ltd, 2005 . - 858 p. ; 15x23cm.

Titre : The Great Gatsby Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Scott Fitzgerald, F., Auteur Editeur : Penguin Books Ltd Année de publication : 2000 Importance : 180 p. Format : 13x20 cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-14-118263-6 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Young, handsome and fabulously rich, Jay Gatsby is the bright star of the Jazz Age, but as writer Nick Carraway is drawn into the decadent orbit of his Long Island mansion, where the party never seems to end, he finds himself faced by the mystery of Gatsby's origins and desires. Beneath the shimmering surface of his life, Gatsby is hiding a secret: a silent longing that can never be fulfilled. And soon, this destructive obsession will force his world to unravel.
In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald brilliantly captures both the disillusionment of post-war America and the moral failure of a society obsessed with wealth and status. But he does more than render the essence of a particular time and place, for - in chronicling Gatsby's tragic pursuit of his dream - Fitzgerald re-creates the universal conflict between illusion and reality...En ligne : https://pictures.abebooks.com/isbn/9780141182636-it.jpg The Great Gatsby [texte imprimé] / Scott Fitzgerald, F., Auteur . - Penguin Books Ltd, 2000 . - 180 p. ; 13x20 cm.

Titre : The Rise and Fall of the British Nation Paperback : A Twentieth-Century History Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : David Edgerton, Auteur Editeur : Penguin Books Ltd Année de publication : 2019 Importance : 682 p. Format : 13x18cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-14-197597-9 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé :
Out of a liberal, capitalist, genuinely global power of a unique kind, there arose from the 1940s a distinct British nation. This nation was committed to internal change, making it much more like the great continental powers. From the 1970s it became bound up both with the European Union and with foreign capital in new ways. David Edgerton's fascinating perspective produces refreshed understanding of everything from the nature of British politics to the performance of British industry.
Packed with surprising examples and arguments, The Rise and Fall of the British Nation gives us a grown-up, unsentimental history, one which is crucial at a moment of serious reconsideration for the country and its future.

Titre : Understanding Foucault, Understanding Modernism Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : David Scott, Auteur Editeur : Bloomsbury USA Academic Année de publication : 2018 Importance : 265 p. Format : 15x23cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-5013-4470-1 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Understanding Foucault, Understanding Modernism shows, on the one hand, that literature and the arts play a fundamental structural role in Foucault's works, while, on the other hand, it shifts to the foreground what it presumes to be motivating Foucault: the interrogation of the problem of modernism. To that end, even his most explicitly historical or strictly epistemological and methodological enquiries directly engage the problem of modernism through the works of writers and artists from de Sade, Mallarmé, Baudelaire to Artaud, Manet, Borges, Roussel, and Bataille. This volume, therefore, adopts a transdisciplinary approach, as a way to establish connections between Foucault's thought and the aesthetic problems that emerge out of those specific literary and artistic works, methods, and styles designated “modern.” The aim of this volume is to provide a resource for students and scholars not only in the fields of literature and philosophy, but as well those interested in the intersections of art and intellectual history, religious studies, and critical theory. Bray, Auteur Editeur : Bloomsbury USA Academic Année de publication : 2018 Importance : 296 p. Format : 15x23cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-5013-4563-0 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : The contemporary philosopher Jacques Rancière has become over the last two decades one of the most influential voices in philosophy, political theory, and literary, art historical, and film criticism. His work reexamines the divisions that have defined our understanding of modernity, such as art and politics, representation and abstraction, and literature and philosophy. Working across these divisions, he engages the historical roots of modernism at the end of the eighteenth century, uncovering forgotten texts in the archive that trouble our notions of intellectual history. The contributors to Understanding Rancière, Understanding Modernism engage with the multiplicity of Rancière's thought through close readings of his texts, through comparative readings with other philosophers, and through an engagement with modernist works of art and literature. The final section of the volume includes an extended glossary of the most important terms used by Rancière, which will be a valuable resource for experts and students alike. Titre : War beyond Words : Languages of Remembrance from the Great War to the Present Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jay Winter, Auteur Editeur : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 2018 Importance : 234 p. Format : 15x23cm. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-108-46661-5 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : What we know of war is always mediated knowledge and feeling. We need lenses to filter out some of its blinding, terrifying light. These lenses are not fixed; they change over time, and Jay Winter's panoramic history of war and memory offers an unprecedented study of transformations in our imaginings of war, from 1914 to the present. He reveals the ways in which different creative arts have framed our meditations on war, from painting and sculpture to photography, film and poetry, and ultimately to silence, as a language of memory in its own right. He shows how these highly mediated images of war, in turn, circulate through language to constitute our 'cultural memory' of war. This is a major contribution to our understanding of the diverse ways in which men and women have wrestled with the intractable task of conveying what twentieth-century wars meant to them and mean to us.
