Résumé : This dissertation aims to assess the students' language learning strategy (LLS) use, to check
whether there are significant differences in the students' LLS use regarding gender, and regarding
proficiency level. The research was conducted with the first year EFL students at the university of
Mascara. A total of 157 students have completed Oxford's Strategy Inventory for Language Learning
(SILL). Three first year EFL teachers and ten students were interviewed. In addition, the final grades
were obtained from the English department administration to determine the students' proficiency level.
The findings revealed that the students' overall use of LLSs is medium where metacognitive strategies
are the most frequently used strategies. Additionally, there are statistically significant differences
between male and female students in the use of affective strategies which has a significant difference
in favor of female. Moreover, the students achievement is explained by two categories of strategies

are affecting the teaching/learning process, many countries are adapting their educational
system to meet the 21 st century learners’ need and Algeria is not an exception. To cope with
the emergence of the new millennium demands, the focus is on preparing generation who
have confidence in their knowledge and produce global citizens. The aim is for pupils to
acquire adequate competences and capacities in school that will enable them to tackle
challenging situations and continue learning even when teaching stops. This can be achieved
only with the promotion of autonomy, to do so, the implementation of assessment strategies
have been adopted. There is a shift from the old habit in testing to a more sustainable and
supporting assessment approach to make learners deeply engaged in the learning process. In
fact, assessment should focus on promoting autonomous learners instead of preparing them
to earn certification. The purpose of this study is to assess learner autonomy not for the sake

independence learning) to find possible remedy for the weaknesses encountered during the

Format : 21*27 cm. Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Among the great work done on EFL listening, different views have
been expressed regarding, its role in successful EFL learning/teaching.
Some Algerian learners still mark low achievements in the target skill.
This study examines the pedagogical procedures which develop and
assess listening skills. In detail, questionnaires were performed to
investigate Algerian EFL teachers’ perspective about what they perceived
to be effective methods that would assist their students in dealing with
their listening difficulties. In this objective, the teachers were asked to
discuss their preferred approaches to help their students deal with their
listening problems, and describe instructional procedures that would
enhance and assess their students’ overall listening abilities.
Consequently, learners have also been asked through a questionnaire;
where they have described their attitudes towards the listening skill; the
way they are taught and assessed and the difficulties they are facing .The
results show that in general the teachers share a preference for a practical
approach to teaching FL listening, stressing the importance of giving
priority to developing their students’ lower level of this skills ; such as
coping with fast speed ,recognizing words in speech and adopt more
adequate way of assessing listening skill separately from speaking .We
claim that effective listeners are better able to engage in recorded and live
listening to assist their proficiencies of the aural input and rely heavily on
autonomous materials and extensive listening available in many audio

Résumé : When trying to explain any success or failure in English language learning, the term ―motivation‖ is
often used by either teachers or students. Indeed, it is one of the key factors that determine the rate of
success. The study was conducted in order to collect information regarding the issue of motivation
within the context of ESP and to identify the origin of Algerian students‘ insufficient motivation to
learn English. The present research work is a case study of third year LMD Biomedical Engineering
students. Data collection combined three instruments of research: students‘ questionnaire completed
by the sample population, a structured interview addressed to ESP teachers, and a classroom
observation. The results revealed that BME students lack motivation and this is due to a number of
reasons largely explained. Hence, the results of the study might serve teachers when they devise their
curricula so as to have students with high level of motivation and therefore, help to create an efficient
learning atmosphere. After the analysis of data, it was revealed that the application of appropriate
methods and strategies for teaching and the use of ICT and technology seemed useful to create a
motivating classroom atmosphere as well as good achievement in the teaching of ESP in our

Format : 21*27 cm. Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Assessment covers all sorts of activities that teachers engage in to evaluate their pupils’ progress and learning needs. Though it is an integral component of teaching, it is regrettable that many programmes in EFL teaching do not require assessment courses. Thus, several teachers enter the classroom without a thorough grounding in assessment issues. Yet, courses on teaching writing often devote a limited amount of time to the discussion of assessment. Therefore, it is too complex to choose rating scales and delineate criteria for valid and reliable essay evaluation. Furthermore, teachers need to determine an effective and formal method of assessing writing ability and specify an appropriate rating scale to serve in the teaching-learning assessment process in the writing classroom. The present study is an attempt to investigate the pedagogical tools for improving our pupils’ writing ability through an atomistic assessing system. In terms of the general layout, the work comprises four chapters. Chapter one introduces the purpose of this study and offers a contextual background and pedagogical instructions related to the textbook New Prospects. It also describes variables, tools and procedures the researcher has relied on to shed light on the problematic. Chapter two reviews relevant studies related to the research topic. It explains test approaches, formats and specifications in assessing writing ability. It also introduces attributes of grading methods, describes the holistic and analytic scoring scales. The second method has been given clear emphasis. Chapter three addresses the methodology, describes the study participants, data collection procedures and the data analysis. It offers conclusions and implications based upon study results with an emphasis on the different essay tests. Chapter four makes recommendations regarding the findings mentioned in chapter three.
