defining the notion of marriage, sex and love. On the other hand, the second chapter

Arabian Nights, this paper explores the Orientalist landmarks in the novel They came to
Baghdad by Agatha Christie which displays the orient as an exotic and inferior location.
It relies on the groundbreaking critical book Orientalism by Edward Said (1979) that
has pointed another dimension of seeing the east. It adopts a critical analysis of the
novel’s Orientalist elements based on historical evidence. The extended essay is
composed of two chapters, a general background and an analytical study. The first
chapter introduces the basic components of the research work which are: the detective
novel, Orientalism, and the Arabian Nights. The second one pinpoints the analysis of
the novel They came to Baghdad which contains the features of Orientalism in the
detective type more than they seemed to be. They Came to Baghdad is a detective novel
by the ‘Britain’s Queen of Mystery’ Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie, written in
1951. It is an espionage and a thriller detective type of story expertly plotted in the city
of Baghdad after the Second World War. The novel is analyzed under the Orientalism
appraisal that indicates how Agatha Christie presents the western characters vis-a-vis
the Orientals). The novel pictures the negative Orientalists’ stereotypes about the
Middle East specifically and about the Orient in general and discusses several
perceptions against the oriental civilization and atmosphere. It emphasizes the
dichotomy of the self and the other and notifies the schism between the west and the
east. The study concludes that They Came to Baghdad is an Orientalist novel by Agatha

write about and the other providing purpose and justification to the other’s existence. This
dissertation aims at analysing the famous gothic novel Dracula by Bram Stocker,
following a postcolonial theory and approach. It attempts to examine the many themes it
conveys in order to discover its relevance to the postcolonial discourse. The first chapter
of this extended essay tackles postcolonialism and the postcolonial theory, in which the
latter focuses on notions such as hybridity and alienation. It also comprises the concept of
Orientalism along with issues of identity and the other, as well as representation and
stereotypes. Moreover, this chapter is also concerned with Travel Journals, and the
techniques used within these literary artefacts such as narration, symbolism, and
intertextuality. In the second chapter, those elements are fetched and analysed within the
novel, to reach a rational result of this novel’s stance concerning the colonial discourse.
Henceforward, a postcolonial study is applied on the novel, its characters, settings and
techniques utilized by the author. Respectively, the novel is found to convey a clear
postcolonial discourse, however, not in the usual sense of the term, instead; it is the
colonial entity which is being conquered by the inferior other, an ‘other’ which is akin to

Format : 21*27 cm. Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : This dissertation examines the way in which the ‘colonizer’ treated the ‘colonized’.
It basically seeks to spot the postcolonial aspects in E.M.Forster’s novel A Passage to
India (1924).The novel revolves around four characters namely: Dr.Aziz, Mr. Cyril
Fielding, Mrs. Moore and Miss Adela Quested. During a trip to the Marabar Caves,
Miss Adela accused Dr.Aziz of assaulting her. Aziz’s trial brings to a boil the racial
tensions and prejudices between the indigenous Indians and the Britishers. Although
the charge against Dr.Aziz was dropped, the gulf between the British and the Native
Indians grows wider than ever. The novel therefore represented the native Indians as
inferior and backward and to British as superior and advanced. In other words, the
novel illustrates the gap existing between the British and the Indians’, a gap which
cannot be bridged.A Postcolonial Study of E.M.Forster’s A Passage to India (1924) [texte imprimé] / Nihel BEKKAL BRIKCI, Auteur . - université de Tlemcen, 2019 . - 61, p. ; 21*27 cm.
